What really amazed me about Rob was his ability to _always_ be calm and
polite. He was a good person, and will be missed. My condolences to his
family. Rest in peace. |

If you did not know him,
Know this of Rob Levin.
He was a huge influence on many people,
Personally I and many others found him easy to deal with,
So many projects had their IRC birth on freenode it would be hard to
imagine the last few years without it.
His commitment to FLOSS was second to none.
As the text flies past the joining of the nick lilo will be sadly
missed, and will the loss of the man behind it.
Regards,
Paul O'Malley |

On behalf og myself, and the Gallery team I offer our deepest condolences to
the family, relatives and friends of Rob. The news came as a shock to us, as
it did for everyone, and we want express our gratitude for the service he,
and the rest of the freenode network, has provided for us. It has truly
revolutionized pur project, as I'm sure it has for many others as well.
In lack of something better to say, "So long, and thanks for all the fish".

I hardly knew Rob aka lilo, but...
I do use the server he worked so hard to set up for the linux community
as a whole, I only had occassion to talk with him once or twice, but
during that time he was considerate to our needs, words can hardly
express my sorrow for your loss at this time, words can hardly make
things any better either, I can only hope that time will heal your
wounds. May Rob rest in peace and may you find solace in his everlasting
peace knowing that he has passed to a better place.
Condolences

Hello,
I'm sorry to have received news that Rob Levin has died. Rob has
sacrificed a lot for what he believed in, which was to develop mass
communications infrastructure for open source projects to collaborate
through. While there are other implementations of this concept, Rob
was the first to do it.
The whole open source community really owes him a lot, in many ways,
a lot of the groups that are notable today, first started
collaborating on freenode -- and many of those groups still do.
Personally, I owe him a lot, although I did not realize it until
today. While I was on freenode staff, I learned a lot about managing
large projects and keeping things relatively sane.
I guess it kind of makes you think about all that he actually did do,
and how he did make a difference. I wish both the PDPC and his family
the best in their future endeavours.
Kind regards,
William Pitcock (nenolod) |

Robert was more than just a mere man in the eyes of many... He was one
who appeared to have superhuman powers when it came
to knowing how to maintain a sense of calm in the most dire
situations. He showed the prefect example of leadership while
remembering to have compassion for the common man.
Times like this remind us how fragle life truely is. Robert will be greatly
missed, but will contine to live on in the hearts of all those who were
touched by him. |

I don't even know how to express what deep regret
I feel for you and the loss of your beloved Rob. I
didn't know him well compared to most - my
contact was limited to interaction on freenode. But
he was always kind, sweet, calm and helpful.
Shortly after hearing of his passing, I posted
something on my blog. I thought you might enjoy
knowing how much I respected and appreciated
Rob.

I realize it may be many weeks or even months
before you can bear to begin reading all of the
emails, posts, etc. I do hope that, in somesmall
way, this might encourage you.
With kindest regards and deep sympathy,

While I never had a chance to meet Rob in person, I did know him online
as lilo for a little over two years. I was introduced to him not long
after I came to Freenode when #unisog was formed. #unisog grew out of
an idea by Phil Denault from WPI.edu based on the mailing list of the
same name. At the time I was the mailing list admin and an early user
of the IRC channel.
Deedra Waters actually promoted #unisog to lilo and he hung out there
ever since we started, since early spring 2004. A few of us chatted
with him here and there, particularly in those early months as botnets
were really ramping up in those days. A few of us provided some help
and assistance whenever bots were from our networks or where we could
reach out to other colleagues in major backbones whenever there was a
particular problem, such as with a DoS attack.
I always saw lilo and Freenode as one of the same. While we didn't
talk much after those early months (hopefully a sign that things were
running well on both our networks), his regular global notices were a
constant reminder that he was a key member of the staff and always a
/msg away.
With deepest sympathies to his friends, family in the real world and
the online one within Freenode,

I only interacted with lilo once or twice, and not in any personal way,
however to hear of his passing is still upsetting. I wish his family the
best in the time to come. His contributions to freenode will be remembered.
